A Community of Things is a song cycle by Deep Brain, a caring duo just trying to help. We aim to invoke joyful healing in community.
The practice of watching and being watched is something people have always done in search of group catharsis. Identifying our personal waves of emotion in other’s voices and bodies helps us to feel less alone. When we open a live portal together, in person, our bodies process the information we receive mimetically and our cells are affected. The alliance that is subsequently created makes sharing a common language possible in ways that unconscious biases and defenses may have prevented.
This project holds space for ideas of birth, death, violence, healing, motherhood, romantic love and family and how they are ubiquitous for us in our archetypal relationships. The performed content is through voices, guitar, piano, synthesizers, field recordings, loops, projected images and sound design.
Deep Brain is the long-term project of beloved pianist Robert Boston and intrepid dramatist Kimberly Pau. We are grateful to return to Spectrum after last appearing with our opera, Trust in the You of Now in 2014. The married partners’ work has been described as pioneering, dauntless, and powerful combining influences of dream pop, folk, opera, grunge and electronica. Boston regularly collaborates as a composer in the dance world and also plays in the free jazz bands Emergency Group and Ballast. Pau’s plays have been published and presented off-off and off-Broadway and her work as a crisis advocate informs her songwriting.
