We are excited to announce two open calls for the 13th MISE-EN Festival, taking place June 15–19, 2027 in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York City.

MISE-EN is a small, musician-run nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting contemporary music and creating meaningful connections between composers, performers, and audiences. The 2027 festival will include collaborations with institutions such as New York University, Columbia University, and Brooklyn College–CUNY.

As always, there is no submission fee for our open calls. However, we strongly encourage applicants to carefully learn about our festival before submitting. Each year, we invite approximately 30 composers from around the world, and our goal is not simply to present concerts—we aim to build a creative community where composers, musicians, and participants can exchange ideas and benefit from one another.

If you are selected, we expect you to be available to travel to New York City during the festival period in June 2027. If you are unable to attend the festival in person, please do not submit an application.

We receive approximately 800–1,000 submissions each year, and as a small organization, we appreciate applicants helping us by submitting only when they are truly interested and able to participate. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to provide travel support, as our operating budget relies primarily on earned revenue and contributions from our community. As an exception, this year we are able to provide shared housing for participants in our Composer Internship program.

1. Call for Scores
Our traditional Call for Scores welcomes composers working in solo and ensemble formats, including works with or without electronics and multimedia. We also welcome fixed-media electronic works, audiovisual pieces, and live electronic performances by composers. In addition to concert works, we encourage proposals for workshops, performances, and other creative projects that explore and expand the possibilities of contemporary music.

2. Student Composer Internship
In addition to our regular call for scores, we are launching the Student Composer Internship Program for student composers.

Selected student composer interns will have the opportunity to write a new work for ensemble mise-en, participate in rehearsals, and experience the premiere of their work during the festival. Interns will also learn about festival operations and participate in various aspects of the festival community.

Shared free housing will be provided for student composer interns during the festival period. While we are pleased to offer accommodation support, we are unable to provide additional travel funding or cover other expenses
