This time, Kelley (flute) and Mark (trombone) team up for a special edition of the Soloist Series—presented for the first time at MISE-EN_PLACE in Harlem!
The Soloist Series began during our early days in Bushwick and has since become a core part of our season programming. Each year, one of our core musicians curates their own program, showcasing their instrument through original repertoire and collaborations. This is the first time two of our artists have co-created a program together—and we can’t wait to share it with you!
Kelley Barnett is a versatile flutist and composer based in New York City. She has performed across the United States and internationally in Sweden, South Korea, Italy, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand. Comfortable in a wide range of styles—from Baroque to cabaret—Kelley has appeared at venues such as Joe’s Pub, Birdland, Rockwood Music Hall, DiMenna Center, and Spectrum. She is a longtime member of ENSEMBLE MISE-EN, with whom she has performed works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Hans Abrahamsen, Lukas Ligeti, and others.
As a composer, Kelley explores electronically manipulated sound and noise-based textures. Her debut composition, Bolt from the Blue, for flute and tape, premiered in 2015. She holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Performance from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Tara O’Connor, and additional degrees from Lynn University Conservatory. Kelley has performed with groups including Tenth Intervention, ShoutHouse, The Secret Opera, and the Bozeman Symphony. Outside music, she co-owns Kuro Kirin Espresso and Coffee in NYC, where she connects with her community through both music and coffee.
Mark Broschinsky is a New York-based trombonist praised as a “true virtuoso on the instrument” (Rapid City Journal). He is a dedicated champion of contemporary music and a core member of ENSEMBLE MISE-EN, regularly performing and commissioning new solo works. He has appeared with ensembles such as the Argento New Music Project, Talea Ensemble, and Tilt Brass, and is a founding member of the Guidonian Hand Trombone Quartet, known for its adventurous programming and support from Chamber Music America, the Barlow Foundation, and New Music USA.
Mark has performed at international festivals including the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and the Britten–Pears Festival in England, and with orchestras such as the Utah Symphony, New World Symphony, and New York Sinfonietta. He has presented solo recitals and masterclasses at numerous universities, including UC Santa Barbara and Brigham Young University. Mark holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music and continues to shape the future of trombone repertoire through performance, pedagogy, and collaboration.
