January 28, 2026, 8 PM, T.J. Borden

T.J. Borden is a cellist working with, in, and around the constraints of the cello. Formerly from Western NY, he is now based in Brooklyn NY, where he spends much of his time exploring the capabilities of his instrument through technically demanding modernist compositions and thorny improvisational scenarios. His improvisational approach has developed through years of sessions and touring, both solo and with iconoclastic musicians such as Jack Wright, Louise D.E. Jensen, and Steve Baczkowski. His language is informed by practical explorations of psychoacoustics and his experience as a chamber musician with groups like [Switch~ Ensemble], Ghost Ensemble, & Mivos Quartet. He has worked with composers such as Brian Ferneyhough, Alvin Lucier, Ambrose Akinmusire, & Catherine Lamb. He received this Doctorate of Musical Arts from UC San Diego, where he studied with Charles Curtis.
